Gambling / Depression
Dear Lindsay,
I am writing to thank you for all the help that you have given me. You have helped me to achieve what I believed impossible and for that, I owe you more than anyone can imagine. You have changed my life – no, more than that – you have given me life.
I have decided to write down my story in a letter to you in an effort to help other people. Please feel free to show this to anybody who has any doubts about your work.
This is my story…
In November 2001 I went to see Lindsay in an effort to stop gambling. I was addicted to poker machines and had been for many years. Over time I had lost over $100,000.
I first sought help for my gambling in 1999 when I went into a program at a local university. It didn’t help. Then I tried to get into counselling at the government funded Break Even but I had to wait 3 months. Whilst I was waiting I tried my local doctor who gave me drugs and referred me to a psychiatrist (who gave me drugs). None of this helped.
I finally got into Break Even and it worked for a while but eventually I started gambling again. I went back to Break Even and saw a psychologist this time (rather than a counsellor). The psychologist recognised that my gabling stemmed from other problems in my life, it was a symptom of my problems, not necessarily the problem itself. She was able to help me to identify some of these problems but was unable to show me how to deal with them. She would bring up all these issues that were causing me pain but did not show me how to deal with the pain. This caused me to become very depressed and unstable and I began to gamble again to hide from the pain.
This is where Lindsay came in. Lindsay recognised the same causes as the psychologist (and more) but the difference was that Lindsay guided me past the pain. The psychologist was exposing my wounds and leaving them to fester. I was a wreck. When Lindsay worked with me he treated the wounds and was able to heal many of them.
I had always been overweight, my self-esteem was very low, I was lonely and bored… the list goes on. My outlook on life was very negative and Lindsay has helped me to turn it all around.
I have lost weight, started socialising more, playing sport and basically am now a much happier person. I still have a little way to go but the future is now looking good. I have stopped gambling and very rarely feel the urge to do so and if I do, I know how to deal with it.
Lindsay has changed my life. He was able to help where nobody else has been able to before and I owe him more than I can say. I will recommend Lindsay to anybody who has a problem, be it gambling or anything else. He has a passion for his work and I believe that makes all the difference. He does not like to see anybody in pain and he will give his all to help you through.
Thank you Lindsay for your understanding and acceptance. It makes all the difference.
From your greatest fan,

S M
